When it comes to everyday living, documents and paperwork are simply part of the process. You probably have piles and stashes of different pieces of paper scattered all throughout your home. Although you may think you know how to get back to what you need when you're ready, the bottom line is that you need to set up a home office filing system. It will make life so much easier because you'll be organized and ready to retrieve a document at a moment's notice. The following tips can be very helpful when you're ready to put an effective home office filing system in place.
Be As Specific As Possible
If you've ever been told to go grab lunch for a co-worker, you know that your next question is likely somewhere along the lines of, "What do you want to eat?" They might respond that they'll whatever you're having but when you return with sushi, they seem displeased. The problem is that they were not specific enough, so you really didn't know what to get.
This is why you should approach your filing system with an eye toward being specific. Instead of having a file that says, "Savings," take it a step further and create sub-files as well. You could include a folder for car savings, vacation savings, wedding savings, college savings, and so much more. As you can see, this type of setup will make it much easier for you to zero in and get exactly what you need without having to do a lot of digging.
Set Up A Color Code And Post It Near The Filing System
Colors are used for so many things each day. When you see a green stoplight, you automatically know that it's your turn to go through an intersection. Conversely, if the red light is showing, it's time to stop. You can use this same logic to create an effective filing system.
Designate a color to represent the things that are urgent or pressing and another color to indicate that there is no need to act on the information in that file. Perhaps you'll put the monthly utility bill in a red folder until it's paid, at which point you move it over to a blue folder.
Good office filing systems can make things run much more smoothly. Once your home office filing system is in place, you can breathe a sigh of relief and feel more at peace than ever before.Share
