5 out of 5 stars Puts more challenge into cardio   January 29, 2008

I use this machine at my gym regularly. It will tire you much more easily than your ordinary treadmill, elliptical, or Stairmaster, because you have to pick up your arms as well as your legs. The self-adjusting speed also has a tendency to make one go faster and faster to "keep up," and then to have to finally slow down again. But that is a good thing: it means that one never feels unsafe on this machine.

Climbing is one of the best cardio activities around, up there with running and swimming, and unlike those it doesn't require high impact movement or a conveniently located pool. Plus, like swimming, climbing will work both the upper and lower body. That makes it a great way to complement weight training by working the aerobic part of your muscles, and not just the anaerobic.

5 out of 5 stars The BEST Cardio machine in the world, hands down   September 24, 2008

How anyone could say absolutely anything negative about this excellent piece of equipment is beyond me. I recently purchased one, and it is the best piece of equipment I have ever owned! I agree completely with the other five star ratings about it, and I'll tell you why. The quality of the machine is top notch, excellent, and built like a tank. I give every piece of equipment in my home gym a brutal workout, and love things that challenge my body to the max. This exceeds my expectations. If you are a serious fitness enthusiast, and love challenges, this is the holy grail for you, as far as home equipment/gym equipment goes. Not only does it condition your cardio system, but helps strengthen your core like no other. I have bought and tried alot of equipment over the years, but I can honestly say this is the most well worth chunk of money I have ever spent. Make sure you have room in your home gym, and that it will fit through your doorway, and it is worth the little extra to have the delivery guys bring it in and place it. It is not only the best cardio workout I have ever gotten on a machine, but it is loads of fun! Even for a five foot one, half pint little 41 year old redhead like me!!

5 out of 5 stars The ultimate full body workout   April 14, 2010

I first became aware of this incredible machine while attending the FBI National Academy in Quantico, Virginia 15 years ago. At the time, I was a veteran police officer of 19 years, in my (very)late 30's, attending the academy in a training enhancement program. I was in excellent physical condition, running at least 5 miles daily and weight training. However, midway through the 3 month academy I developed a running injury which limited my cardio training to a stationary bicycle. Bored with the bike and noticing this machine in the FBI's well stocked gym, I decided to give it a try. Within 10 minutes of intial use I was hooked! Never had I experienced such an amazing full body workout, and never have I experienced one since. I have used just about every cardio machine made and owned a number as well. My 400 square foot home gym is equipped with a commercial treadmill, an eliptical and a ski machine, along with a commercial grade multi station gym unit and thousands of pounds of Olympic iron. But I would trade it all for a Jacobs Ladder. The only thing that has kept me from buying one is the cost and size. My home gym is already overflowing and as for the cost? Well, $3500 is nothing to sneeze at!

Now in my early 50's and retired from law enforcement, I don't run anymore, prefering hikes instead. But two decades of "pounding" the streets have left my feet flat (yup...some cops are indeed flatfoots!) and aching from plantars fascitis.....so, hiking is quickly becoming a painful experience. I also tandem bike, with my Wife, in the good weather months. But if my feet continue to be an issue, I just may have to break down and buy one of these next winter!

July 20, 2010...Ok, it's only money, I bought the ladder. Actually, I bought the "new" consumer version of the ladder as is seen on the tv show "The Biggest Loser". It's a little bit smaller than the gym version and the ladder rungs are aluminum instead of ash. And it's $2750 delivered, instead of $3500 delivered like the commercial model. Other than that, it's the same workout as the commercial ladder. As I said in my original post, this is a fairly large machine. It will go through the average doorway without issues. It is also fairly easy to roll around on it's wheels. You can tilt it to complete horizontal and balance it easily. In this position you can easily roll it around on the two wheels like a gurney. You have to keep in mind though, it is about 6' long in horizontal position. So, if you have a narrow hallway before a turn into a room, you may find it a challenge to get this machine into the room.

Now, for the workout. As I said, it has been 15 years since I first used the "Ladder". My best time back then was an hour straight. This morning was my first workout on my new ladder. I managed to do 10 minutes!..LOL. It's going to take a while to get back to 1 hour. True to my memory and the "Ladder's" reputation, it kicked my butt! By the time the 10 minutes had elapsed, my heart rate was maxed and I was sweating up a storm. Now granted, I'm not in my late 30's like I was back when I first used a "Ladder", still, I have maintained a decent workout routine all these years. I said it before and I will say it again, NO other cardio machine on the market today can match the intense workout of the "Ladder"!!...period

Yes, it's a lot of money. But I have always had the philosophy that I will be spend the "big bucks" if the equipment keeps me healthy. I'd rather spend the money on something that gives me a longer and better life than something that "goes fast and shines in my garage".

This piece of equipment has to be the best workout device I've ever used!!! I am an avid outdoors type and not a gym rat, but I had a free trial membership to a gym that had one of these and I was hooked! I've never had such a thorough workout from just one machine. I was studying for my medical school entrance exam at the time and I felt like the cross crawl type movements were good for the brain as well as the body. I've since moved from the city where this gym was located, but I wanted to send out the word to anyone who is thinking about this machine. It is an excellent investment to your health and well being. It is on my medical school graduation wish list!

I think I've used every type of gym equipment out there in the past 30 years. This is the best I've tried so far. You can't help but get a great workout with this equipment. I go straight to it when I don't have much time. I can get an intense workout in a matter of minutes. I recommend trying one out at a gym before buying however. People with motion sickness might find the moving ladder rungs disorienting until they get used to it.
